ENGAGE are an amazing old school hardcore band from sunny
Dundee, Scotland. Named in 1999 as 'UK's best kept hardcore
secret' they have been amazing people all over with their
music since. ENGAGE started in December 1997 with Paul
Ross on vocals, Colin on bass, Cameron on guitar and Dek
on drums. Dek was soon replaced by Ed in March 1998 and
then a month later they played their first show.
A year later, in March 1999, I was reading an Engage
interview in ENZK zine. What Paul had to say was very
interested and I was interested to hear their recordings.
Paul sent me a CD with 5 songs on it (now "When
will this end" 7" except track 5) and I was
totally amazed. On first listen opening notes of "Rebuilding"
amazed me and I was sure they must be on Revelation.
Straight away I asked him if I could release it and
Engage were intrigued. Well, whilst on tour with Kneejerk
and Abjure in July 1999, ENGAGE played the Scotland
dates too and that definitely meant I wanted to release
their songs on Skipworth.
During summer 1999, Engage did a full UK Tour with
posi-core heroes HHH - once again this was a great tour,
every show a classic. We had such a great laugh, developed
a close friendship and there was always an awesome atmosphere.
For that tour we released "When will this end"
MCD Limited Edition to 100 copies (maybe one day we
will get a list together of who has one), so people
could check it out before the 7". The responce
was incredible to the CD, people went crazy for it!
Then they toured UK several times with AFI, ENSIGN,
IMBALANCE, BANE, COUNTERPART, DIVIDE and played tons
of shows with a wide range of bands, hooking up for
quite a few shows with label mates ABJURE.
On the 14th July 2000 "When Will This End"
7" hit the streets. Many great shows followed including
some classic pits on the Ensign / Engage tour and also
with AFI. In November 2000 they set off on another tour
once again with great friends HHH, this time to the
rest of cold Europe and toured for 3 weeks during which
they van broke down about 5 times but they had another
great experience.
Engage are definitely one of the best old school bands.
"Rebuilding" is a classic and always will
be as is the whole ep!
Engage has taken time-out to sort out line-up changes
and this has still to be resolved but Paul tells me
that he is now seriously looking to get back on the
road again with a great line-up. Look out!
